Mujica recently resigned from the senator post, which he has held since 2015, since he completed a five-year term.
The 83-year-old, a former guerrilla leader who has spent many years in prison, has claimed to withdraw for personal reasons and explained that he does not want to remain in the Senate until the end of the mandate in 2020, “due to the long journey. ”
He also apologized for all colleagues “who could have hurt during heated debates. In 2013, however, he had apologised to former Argentina President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner after calling it the old “shire”.
His comments were accidentally recorded at a conference where he did not realize that the microphone was activated. In 2016 he said Venezuela's president, Nicolas Maduro, is “bulls like a goat”.
Mujica became famous for refusing to live in the presidential palace during the mandate, and most of the wages were split into donations.
