Turkish delegation to Washington to ease tensions

A Turkish diplomatic delegation will visit Washington on Thursday to ease tensions. The announcement of the visit prevented the rapid decline in Turkish currency value. On Monday, Turkish lira suffered the biggest decline in a decade. This came after reports that President Trump's administration is looking into the possibility of granting Turkey tax exemptions to the US market.
Lyra recovered a little after news of the diplomatic visit. But the currency began falling again Tuesday following reports denying earlier news that a preliminary agreement had been reached between Ankara and Washington.
Turkish Deputy Foreign Minister Sedat Onal is said to lead the delegation, according to a foreign ministry source. Previous reports said a much stronger delegation would be sent to Washington, including foreign, domestic, defence and finance ministers.
At the top of the agenda are expected to be discussions on the ban of American pastor Andrew Brunson. Brunson is currently under house arrest, while being tried on charges of terrorism. The White House rejects the accusations as groundless, accusing Ankara of kidnapping.
Tensions between the US and Turkey escalated last week, when US President Donald Trump targeted two Turkish ministers with sanctions for the arrest of pastor Brunson. Ankara responded with reciprocal measures.
