President Trump has repeatedly repeated the appeal for his release several times, while taking a series of austerity measures against Turkey, which have shocked the local currency Lira.
US Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin, at a meeting with Trump's cabinet, stressed that the United States is ready to apply additional sanctions on Turkey unless the pastor is released soon.
“We are planning a series of other measures on Turkey if Brunson is not released. We are also able to apply much more sanctions than we are planning”, Mnuchin said before the American president.
American pastor Andrew Brunson is accused of supporting the 2015 coup organisers in Turkey and is currently under house arrest. He has served for 22 years as a pastor in Turkey, while if convicted, he risks facing a 35-year sentence.
