A South Korean Appeals court sentenced former President Park Geun-hye to 25 years in prison Friday, following charges of involvement in a corruption scandal that brought him down from power in 2017.
Park became the first democraticly elected leader in South Korea to leave his post when the Constitutional Court dismissed him because of a disastrous millions of dollars scandal.
Seoul's Supreme Court proved that Park, in collaboration with its friend Choi Soon-sil, has received tens of billions of profits from its non-profit funds.
Such ethical relations between political power and financial power damage the essence of democracy and distort order in the market economy, giving people a strong sense of loss and deep distrust in our society”, presiding Judge Kim Mun-Suk said in the decision.
The first decision for Park Gwen-hye was announced in April, in a live broadcast where the former president himself was not present. Then she was fined $17 million and 24 years in prison.
