Border correction, Serbia's interest

According to president correction of borders, it means uniting the Presevo Valley with Kosovo and not autonomy for Serbs in Kosovo.

Thaci's idea has so far not been supported by anyone, even by the international community's important personalities.

For some analysts, the idea is considered dangerous.

Analyst Imer Mushkolaj tells Kosovo that all this has been done to create the impression that the country is facing an uncomfortable situation, as according to him, thus suits President Hashim Thaci.

“I believe that with the recent statements of President Thaci and Serbian President Vuciq on the other side, some impression has been given that the situation is not calm. This serves Mr. Thaci because he saw no one's support is putting the proposal for border correction into public debate, the proposal for exchange of territories, and that is a very dangerous idea. So the political situation is calm despite attempts to create the impression that this is not the case. In fact, Thaci, with his statements and ideas, has remained isolated. We are seeing that no one is supporting these proposals, not that not opposition parties, but also the ruling parties have come up against his idea of exchanging territories”, says Mushkolaj.

According to him, Thaci is thus trying to create an impression that he is the key person of this process and that he must be the person who decides for the future of the country, regardless of whether he does not have the support of the Kosovo Assembly as the highest legislative body, which should give the decision whether it should be part of this process or not.

Mushkolaj says such ideas do not make it public because Kosovo's agreement with Serbia is also a sensitive and unfinished issue.

On the other hand, Mushkolaj stresses that Kosovo has fulfilled all its compromises regarding the rights of Serbs, so he invites that it should not go beyond the last compromise and that, according to him, is Ahtisaari's Pack.

“Let's not forget that Kosovo and Serbia have not finished demarcation of the border, but this process cannot happen now when Serbia still does not recognise Kosovo as an independent state. It means first that Serbia must recognise Kosovo as an independent state, then go to demarcation of the border. On the other hand, Kosovo has made its compromises regarding the rights of Serbs and what it can offer to Serbs with the Ahtisaari package. So Ahtisaari's Pako has been the last compromise Kosovo has made and should not go beyond this compromise... Any other idea that leads beyond Ahtisaari's package actually defunct the state of Kosovo and should not happen”, he said.

This idea of President Thaci is not random. So says Progress Kryeziu, researcher in the Group for Political and Jurydic Studies (GSPJ).

According to him, negotiating such constitutional premises as territorial integrity is an irreversible, irreparable and dangerous mistake for Kosovo citizenship.

We counter the agenda of this idea, and as such, we consider this idea to suit Serbia and only serves its interests. So on the basis of that, we note with what intensity and with what rush Serbia is trying to complete the dialogue. And through promoting such ideas, it aims to integrate into the EU by completing chapter 35. And as a last resort, there is also a halt to the normal development of Kosovo's citizenship by further contesting its citizenship”, Kryeziu said.

As for President Thaci's proposal to pursue the Netherlands-Belgium model for the realisation of “change of territory”, Kryeziu says he does not fit Kosovo's interests, as it is likely to be done on ethnic grounds.

We consider this comparison to be absolutely non-valid, taking to base the excellent diplomatic relationship these two countries, Belgium and the Netherlands have, and considering the basis on which this agreement is made. It has become firmly based on the practical basis of exchange of territories between the Netherlands and Belgium. In our case, however, I fear that it is becoming fully based on ethnic lines. So in the end we consider that this idea is dangerous and that it does not suit the interests of Kosovo”, he told Kosovas.

Regarding this idea, the chairman of the Association of Witness Families, Xhavit Jashari, has also spoken.

He says there is no room for panic, since according to him the KLA war does not allow the division of the country.

He in a telephone proposal has told Kosova Prees that the president's statement would be in order without exchange of territories.

I think that the term "changing of borders" must be removed. But correcting the borders should be done, and I think this declaration is fair and should be supported. Otherwise, Thaci has repeatedly talked about the process of dialogue, inviting all institutions and political parties to get involved in the process. Also, he has warned that at the end of the process, citizens through the referendum will decide on the final agreement with Serbia.
