The group condemned the deaths, calling for an investigation into the “policy initially and then interrogating”.

At least 77 people have reportedly been killed since January, Amnesty said, with 31 deaths in police attacks aimed at clearing host cities for the Games.

Authorities have said people were shot after resistance to the police.

The raids began in July, with senior officials telling their officers not to hesitate to make strong decisions.

Asian Games will take place in the Jakarta capital and in the town of Palemang, South Sumatran. Authorities are dispatching 100,000 police and soldiers for the event, which will see about 17,000 athletes compete from August 18th to September 2nd in the biggest sporting event after the Olympics.

“Autorities promised they would improve security for all, but we have seen police shoot and kill dozens of people responsible for almost zero deaths”, Amnesty International head Usman Hamid said.
