It becomes the first among former advisors of President Trump to appear in court, on charges of bank fraud and taxes from federal investigators considering Russian intervention in the 2016 presidential elections.
Paul Manafort faces 18 criminal charges, including bank fraud, and may face a 30-year sentence if convicted.
At the start of the trial process, prosecutors said Mr. Manafort set himself up “over law” and had “lying”.
The former political consultant, who led the Trump campaign for three months, has been declared not guilty.
Prosecutors are expected to argue that his luxury life does not match what he had declared in his tax statements.
None of the charges Mr. The manual faced trial Tuesday did not concern the investigation of the possible 2016 agreement between Russia and Trump's campaign.
The charges stem from lobism and its activity as political consultant for former Ukraine President Viktor Yanukovych.
Since President Trump has called the investigation of the special prosecutor, Mueller “a witch hunt”, the decision to be made in Mr. Manafort's case can determine the credibility of the investigation.
