A rare sexually transmitted infection (STI) can cause a <x2 public health emergency” within 15 years if not taken seriously, the British Association for Sex Health and HIV (BASHH) has warned.
Mycoplasma Genitalium (MG) currently affects only 1-2 percent of people, but the UNH warned in a new set of guidelines that it could become resistant in 15 years if proper testing and treatment is not available by local health services.
MG can cause inflammation of the reproductive organs for women, which can lead to infertility. Symptoms also include pain during sex and post-coital bloodshed.
For men it causes urire inflammation and can lead to water discharges from the penis.
Dr. Peter Greenhouse, a sex consultant at Bristol and a member of the UNH, told the BBC, “this is another good reason to pack condoms for summer holidays and actually use them”.
Instructions show that people can be tested for MG through the analysis test of nucleic acid (NAAT).
There is also concern that the STI can resist antibiotics unless treated properly.
