Macro: Migrant Centres in Africa Will Not Work

France's President Emmanuel Macron said in an interview with the BBC that the European Union's plans to build migrants' processing centres in North Africa will not work unless the process is guided by countries there. Speaking during a visit to Nigeria, Macron said that many African countries are concerned that such centers will act as an attractive factor for migrants.
So far, no African country has agreed to set up these centers.
EU leaders agreed on exploring such an idea last week at a summit in Brussels.
They also agreed to create secure centres for accepting migrants within the EU, but have deep differences about implementing the plan.
Macron said Europe would face migration from Africa for decades, due to, as stated, unplanned population recovery in Africa.
He has been criticised for such statements in the past, and some have charged him with repeating colonial rhetoric.
But, Macro also said the EU cannot make decisions for African countries. Macron said his top priority is to discourage people from getting “mad risks” just to get to Europe.
