The famous “festival San Ferminit”, known for running bulls, has started at Pamlona with its traditional signal of fireworks.
And as fireworks broke out, thousands of people gathered at the giant party broke out in Brohorimia. Run with bulls, it is the climax of the world's famous festival, but nine days and eight nights of this festival are also filled by other traditional events, music, alcoholic beverages, and, in fact, some 1 million visitors each year to the northern city of Spain, which has fewer than 200 thousand inhabitants.
The San Fermin Festival has become famous by the great writer Ernest Hemingway, at its level in 1926 “Sun and also rises”.
For eight consecutive mornings, from Saturday, the courageous will compete with the bulls on a 850m track along the city's streets until the match arena. Four Americans and three Spaniards were injured last year after being hit by bulls, while dozens of others also suffered injuries, mainly because of riots during the race.
Animal rights activists criticise the festival, and they call it cruel, but bullfight lovers say it is all part of San Fermin's tradition, which must be preserved. The bullfight is also protected by the Spanish Constitution as part of the country's cultural heritage.
