June 15th marks the first day of Fiter Bajrami, and the Muslim world prepares for celebrations. Thousands of believers turned to mosques this morning in the United Arab Emirates. Once the sun's first rays emerge, people have gathered to pray together.
Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Oman and Bahrain celebrate this marked day of the Islamic calendar on Friday, as well as Indonesia and many other countries, while celebrations will be held in India and Pakistan on June 16th because the moon did not appear there.
Bajrami does not have a definite date, it depends on the new moon's appearance. The celebrations of Fiter Bajrami mark and the end of the holy month of Ramadan. Family and friends meet together for prayer and in some cultures, tradition calls for new clothing, and maturity for candy, while females adorn their hands with goats.
Many believers also use this holiday as a time to donate, for the entire month of Ramadan represents in itself a time of reflection.
Fasting, its main feature, is one of five pillars of Islam and an extremely spiritual moment for Muslims around the world to focus on self-purification, tranquillity, patience and devotion to religion. This time, on Ramadan occasion, even Taliban in Afghanistan are observing an unusual ceasefire several days, even though they again issued a warning against foreigners in the region.
