Malaysia's new prime minister said Saturday that he “prevented his predecessor from leaving the country”. Mahathir Mohammad said he is responsible for a travel ban for former Prime Minister Najib Razak and his wife. The Associated Press reports that a travel document showed Najib and his wife were scheduled to leave on a private jet Saturday for Jakarta.
Prime Minister Mahathir, who is 92, said the government has found evidence concerning Najib Razakut's involvement in a massive corruption scandal.
Najib reported on Facebook that he was going on vacation, but would return a week later, prompting rumors that he was trying to escape possible legal prosecution. He denies any wrongdoing.
Anwar Ibrahimi's daughter also told the media that the opposition leader will be released from prison Tuesday and will receive a full royal pardon.
Anwar is in prison for corruption and sexual charges that have been widely denounced as politically motivated.
Anwar had served as deputy prime minister and finance minister in Mahathhir's government and was viewed as his heir until he was fired in 1999.
Najib Razak received a blow in Wednesday's general elections, losing to Mahathir MOhamed, who is now the oldest elected official in the world.
Najib Razak resigned on Saturday as chairman of the ethnic Malay party that has led since the establishment of Malaysia as an independent country in 1957. Razak has also been leader of the Barisan coalition that was lost in the general elections.
