At the polls, 46 per cent of residents have emerged, until this process has developed in the period of severe economic crisis.
The main opposition candidate, Henry Falcon, has rejected the election outcome following the closure of the ballot boxes.
“We do not consider this election procedure valid, we need to hold other elections in Venezuela”, he said.
The head of the National Election Council, Tibissay Lucena, has said that after counting more than 90 per cent of the vote, Maduro has won 67.7 per cent or 5.8 million votes and Falcon has won 21.2 per cent or 1.8 million votes.
” They've underestimated me”, Maduro said in front of his supporters outside the presidential palace in Caracas.
Government officials have said the elections were “free and fair”, but most of the opposition has boycotted the result.
US President Donald Trump's administration has said it will not recognise the election outcome.
Through a Twitter post, the American mission to the United Nations has described the process as “insinuation to democracy”.
