The United States hopes to reach a new agreement with European allies in terms of Iran's nuclear programme.
At least that was Secretary of State Mike Pompeii's statement in an interview for Fox News.
The American top diplomat also explained that the United States' decision to withdraw from the agreement was not a blow to Europeans.
I have hope that in the coming days and weeks we will be able to come up with a accord that really works, that truly protects the world from Iranian misconduct, not only from their nuclear program, but also from their rockets and malicious behaviour,” was expressed.
But a completely different and harsh approach comes from another American official. John Bolton, national security adviser, warned European firms that they could be punished for disrespecting US sanctions.
Asked whether Washington would impose sanctions on European firms, Bolton told CNN that everything is possible and that it depends on the behaviour of governments.
“I believe Europeans will realise that it is in their interest to join us,” added the adviser.
German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas has acknowledged that it will be difficult for the German government to protect firms when US sanctions enter into force. However, major European powers, along with Russia and China, have confirmed their commitment to the historic agreement signed in 2015.
