“People expect shots fired here,” said Franco, who had been mayor of La Linea de la Conception for almost three years.
Franzo doesn't mind comparing this country to a Colombian city of Pablo Escobar, reports The Guardian”, transmits Periscope.
Over the past 12 years and the last 12 months in particular -- La Linea, which lies in the shadows of the Rock of Gibraltar, has gained an undisputed reputation as Spain's most troubled city.
Last year, Spanish police confiscated 145, 372kg of hashish in the region and 11, 785kg of cocaine.
Last April, 100 people threw stones towards civilian guards and national police officers, while they tried to catch a load of weed on El Tonelero Beach.
Today, city unemployment is about 35%. Arithmetics, says Franco, is simple. “ [People] have little hope of finding jobs, which makes it ideal to become narcotics. ”
Franciso Mena, the head of the anti-drug association, says the result has been a <x0-munge security, but is in certain places and due to some very determined people. ”
He says the bad image given to this country makes very few people come here to practice their profession as doctors or teachers.
“The boy with a scooter and a mobile phone will receive 1,000 euros per day,” he says.
The guys who take him to the beach and cars can get 3,000 4000 euros, and the guys who run the drug boats can do something between 30,000 and 60,000 euros on a trip. ”
It's a lucrative business, but it's also hard to leave once you're part of it.”/Persicopi/
