Russia-Western tensions: China on the Moscow side

During a visit to Moscow, the Chinese Defence Minister has openly said that military co-operation between the two countries is a message to America, thus offering Russia support in the battle with the West.

The Chinese military leader is listed alongside Russia at a time when tensions between Moscow and the West continue to deteriorate, with diplomatic isolation, economic sanctions and challenging military exercises.

On his first visit to Russia, new Chinese Defence Minister Wei Feng has declared that his visit comes with direct recommendation from President Xi Jinping and on his behalf sent two messages to Russia.

I am visiting Russia to show the world the high level of developing our bilateral relations and the firm determination of our armed forces to reinforce strategic co-operation”, ey Feng has said at a meeting with Russian counterpart Sergey Shoigu.

Second, he has followed, visiting Moscow to show the Americans the close connections between our armed forces, especially in this situation.

The Chinese side is willing to support the Russian side to address our common concerns and unify our stance on international problems”, the Chinese minister has said.
