He may be at the centre of Western criticism, charging that he is violating human rights in his own country, but Erdogan has full friends in the Balkans. On the 557th anniversary of the establishment, the city of Novi Pazar (New Bazaar) in Serbia has honoured the Turkish president with the title “Honourable Cityman”.
The honour of this title has been approved by the municipal council of this city, which has voted it on Friday.
The numerous “Investments, infrastructure and economic projects and efforts to preserve the culture and historical heritage of the Sandzak region are some of the reasons for this symbolic” gesture, said the town's mayor, Nihat Bisevac. Novi Pazar is the chief centre of the Sandzak region, divided between Serbia and Montenegro, where most of the population are Muslims. Part of this region, Serbs know him by the name Raska.
