A treatment for the most common cause of blindness may be available within five years, scientists believe, as the first two patients to have produced a revolutionary stem cell therapy have recovered enough images to be able to read.
Both patients have advanced AMD ) macular degradation associated with age that destroys the central image.
They were both losing their sight. They were unable to see a book, said surgeons, reports the Guardian”, broadcast Periscope.
But a “part” implanting stem cell damage to the back of the eye has restored the central image not only to read but to see the faces that were once turbulent.
In the future, scientists behind the discovery predict that the procedure may be as common as the cataract operation, helping a large number of 600,000 to 700,000 people in Great Britain who are losing sight because of AMD.
The breakthrough comes from the London project of “Cure Blendness”, a collaboration between London University Professor Pete Coffey and Professor Lyndon da Cruz.
They were aimed at treating the 10 people who had the form of a <x0th> thing of AMD”, caused by the sudden flow of blood vessels in the eyes that could destroy the maculum, a key part of the retina.
The epithelial cells of the retina's pigment (RPE) in the macula are crucial to the functioning of light-sensitive photoreceptor cells that die without the support of the SPE./Periscopi/
