After Parliament's deputy chairman announced the outcome of the vote for the new election regulation, a clash between Magyar and opposition MPs began. There were fist exchanges and delays, while MPs followed each other through the parliament halls.
Government critics in Turkey are alarmed by the new law giving the High Election Board authority to merge election areas, as well as to move ballot boxes to other areas. Also, the ballots will be accepted without the local election commission's stamp.
Among other things, the new law envisions that security forces will be allowed to enter the polls if invited by a voter. The Turkish government says this move will be a counterweight against threats by the Kurdish Workers' Party, The PKK, in the country's southeast area. Opposition lawmakers have indicated that the presence of security forces could be used to make the vote counting process less transparent. /voa
