A luxurious house has been discovered in Rome dating back to Emperor Adrian's time and discovered during the excavations of a new subway line.
The remains of the commandant's “home to” date from the second century AD, were discovered during work at the subway station in the centre of town.
“We believe this is the house where the barracks commander lived and slept after work”, said the head of the Roman Agency for the preservation of monuments, Francesco Prosper, and explained that the house is 300 square metres and has been discovered about 12m below the road level.
Full buildings with rich mosaics and wall decorations, including a heated water bath, will be moved to allow metro works.
“When underground tunnels end, archaeological discovery will be returned”, he announced.
