Albania is in the danger zone in terms of seismic activity risk. According to a recent report by two American scientists, the country is estimated at a risk rate of 10 percent, the highest in Europe, the only red - colored (see map).
Geologists predict that there may be twice as many earthquakes in 2018 worldwide.
The year 2018 recorded just in its first month three strong quakes of over 7 magnitudes. Though it is difficult to predict earthquakes, in a report published by two American scientists, Roger Bilhalm and Rebecca Bendick, argue that in five historical periods, seismic activity doubled when Earth's rotation slowed. The report estimated the risk rate by considering 173 world nations, given the probability of an earthquake, storms, floods, droughts and rising sea level.
Albania's Threat by Earthquakes
From evidence thus far held, results from the 2nd century BC to our day, Albania has been hit by 55 strong earthquakes with intensity to eight. Of these 55 earthquakes of a period of more than 2000, 36 belong to the 19th century.
European seismology stations have recorded the precise measurement of earthquakes in Albania with a magnitude of 6 since the early 20th century. While the lowest magnitudes of up to two faces have started measuring in the late 1960 ' s.
Albania is in the midst of a wide area of contact between the tectonic plates of Africa.
The regions surrounding Albania include a vast tectonic area that includes Greece, Albania, Montenegro, Macedonia, southern Bulgaria and Western Turkey. Each year, at least one quake of a magnitude lower than 6.5 occurs in this region. /Monitor
