The share of the Wisconsin Avenue, ahead of the Russian Federation Embassy, was officially named Square “Boris Nemcov”, a Russian opposition killed just three years ago while crossing a bridge in Moscow.
Russia has protested that decision. This politicised street name game is not new in Washington, the AP writes.
In recent years, there has been an effort to appoint China's embassy path according to the dissident and Nobel Peace Prize winner Liu Sijaobou, who died in prison last year.
Members of the US Congress have supported similar efforts for the section of the road to Cuba's embassy to be called Oswald Pijii, pro-democracy activists who died in 2012 in a car accident, which some consider to be organised by the government in Havana.
The AP writes that several Russian politicians have suggested that the American Embassy's route in Moscow be named “as the American-veritoric”.
