Pro-government troops have followed the attacks on Guta, a suburb of Damascus, killing only this Tuesday, 66 people. The massacre has caused international indignation, given the fact that since Sunday air and missile attacks have claimed the lives of over 210 people, mostly young and children.
The news has confirmed the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, while there has been no reaction from the Syrian army except for the earlier declaration that only rebels have been targeted. The recent acts of violence in the Syrian capital's peripheral area are part of a massive operation by President Bashar al Assad's regime, focused on several areas of the country to end the seven-year rebellion against him.
Panos Moumtzis, UN co-ordinator for humanitarian affairs in Syria, condemned the bombing of 5 hospitals and warned that deliberate attacks on medical buildings could constitute war crimes. While the French government named the action a serious violation of international human rights law.
In Brussels, Syrian opposition leader Nasr al Hariri told representatives of EU countries that intensifying the attacks constituted a war crime and called for the exercise of greater pressure on Assad. Meanwhile, in Geneva, the UN children's agency expressed its indignation at the murder of minors, claiming that the event has left it speechless.
