The festivities today are under the black and white blue flag.
Just as its neighbors Lithuania and Latvia, Estonia was part of the Russian Kingdom and Soviet Russia before declaring independence 100 years ago.
The small state was occupied by the Soviet Union in 1940, and from Germany for three years during World War II.
The country has regained its independence in August 1991 and has joined the European Union and NATO in 2004.
