Judge Moody Akhtaruzaman of the special court on Thursday has sentenced the former prime minister twice to harsh prison. He read some selective parts of the 632-page trial, reports “Al Jazeera”, the Periscope broadcast.
The decision confirms that no one stands above the law,” said the lawyer and Minister of Parliamentary Affairs Anisul Haque.
Zia, the head of the Bangladesh People's Party (BNP), along with five others, was charged with embezzlement funds destined for the orphan trust.
Tarique Rahman, the eldest son of Zia, is believed to be her political heir.
All six were charged with misusing $21m from foreign donations destined for charity.
Four others who were given another 10 years in prison are former lawmaker Quazi Salimul Haq, former head secretary in Montenegro, Kamal Wooddin Sidddique, Zia Mominur Rahman and businessman Sharfuddin Ahmed./Periscopi/
