Ukrainian Orthodox priests are holding a historic synod in the cathedral of St Sofia in Kiev to create a new national church, which will have no connection with Russia.
Today's meeting follows a historic decision by the Patriarchate of Constantinople to remove the Ukrainian Orthodox Church from the Moscow Patriarchate, which has been overseeing the Ukrainian branch for hundreds of years.
The decision angered the Russian church, forcing it to cut all ties with Constantinople.
Relations between Ukraine and Russia have been strained since Russia annexed Crime in 2014, following a pro-Western uprising in Kiev.
Ukrainian President Petro Porosenko is expected to attend Saturday's meeting between representatives of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the Patriarchate Kyiv and the Ukrainian Orthodox Orthodox Church. Moscow's loyal subsidiary says it will not be a synod and denies being a Kremlin tool.
Before the meeting, Russian Patriarch Kiril asked Pope Francis, the United Nations and the world's religious and world leaders to protect the faithful and clergy from “the execution”.
