They belonged to Nina Ivanovna Coroleva, the widow of Sergei Pavlovich Korolev, former director of the Soviet space programme. The Soviet Union donated the stones to honor her husband's work.
Korolev has been an engineer of rockets, aircraft and space ships and Soviet space navigation monitors during the 1950s and HINA60s.
His work was very important for the success of numerous Soviet space programs, including the historic flight to orbit around Earth on Yuri Gagar's Vastok 1 ship.
He died in 1966 and failed to see the samples taken from the moon.
“The symbol of these stones costs more than any amount of monetary that can be paid at auction” explained Sotheby Cassandra Hatton expert for AFP
