The new research has confirmed our ancestors' claims that it is better to sleep if a window or door is opened in the bedroom.
Dutch researchers from Eindhoven used high - tech methods to monitor the quality of the sleep of 17 healthy volunteers over five nights. A group of participants slept with partially opened doors or windows in the bedroom, allowing better ventilation, while the other group slept in a closed room.
The results of the study showed that better ventilation rooms had lower levels of carbon dioxide in the air (during the breathing), and this affected the best sleep of participants sleeping in windows or open doors.
The lower levels of carbon dioxide in the bedroom mean a greater depth and higher efficiency of sleep, as well as a smaller amount of wake up at night.
Steven Feinsilver, a sleep expert, was convinced of the results of the investigation, who said that the night environment is important for a good sleep. Not all bedrooms are affected by the quality of our sleep, since our environment is important for good sleep.
It is generally known that it is better to sleep in a colder environment, but so far it has not been paid attention to how the quality of the inner air affects the quality of sleep.
The most accurate modern research can offer better knowledge of how conditions in the room (steperature, humidity, air cleanliness, noise, light...) affect the quality of sleep.
Today scientists have modern methods and research co-operation available: precise instruments for measuring room conditions, as well as modern equipment for measuring brain waves during sleep (EEG).
The results of this research were published in “Indoor Air” magazine.
