Taking test of vitamin D into pregnancy can reduce the risk of babies developing schizophreny in adulthood, one study was found.
One-born people have 44% more likely to suffer from mental illness, Danish researchers said.
They claim it suggests a lack of vitamin D in mothers that will make up 8% of cases.
Professor John McGrath, from Aarhus University, said that “as the fetus relies on mother's vitamin D deposits, findings suggest that pregnant women have adequate levels may result in preventing certain cases of schizophrenicia”.
