One in four young women has once been affected by mental disorders, including emotional problems, such as depression and anxiety.
The NHS official report in England found young girls aged 17-19 were twice as likely to have mental problems, and 23.9% reported it.
Psychiatrics said problems are less common in younger age groups but are on the rise.
Mental disorders are affecting many and children. Of those between the ages of 5 and 15, one in nine had a disorder when 13 years ago they were 1 in 10.
The findings are based on a survey of more than 9,000 youths.
