Juncker was quoted on December 29th in German media, saying Romania is “technically well prepared”.
However, I believe the government in Bucharest has not yet understood what it means to lead EU states”, he added.
Romania will lead the European Union presidency on January 1st, for the first time since its 2007 membership in the bloc.
Juncker added that the European Union presidency “requires the will to listen to others. I doubt this”
He also questioned the state's capacity to maintain unity because of domestic political problems.
There should be unity at home to strengthen unity in Europe during the” mandate, Juncker said.
In November, Romania President Klaus Iohannis said his country is not ready to fulfill this task.
He referred to a situation involving Social Democratic Party leader Liviu Dragnea, who was unable to elect prime minister due to charges of election fraud.
“We are prepared and I believe we can make it out of”, Iohannis said on December 21st.
