The suspect, who has been mapped by security services, managed to flee after the shootout with armed soldiers and police, but is believed to have also been wounded.
The shooting occurred very close to an extremely populated Christmas market, near one of the city's central squares, “Place Kleber”.
Six of Tuesday's wounded are reportedly in critical condition for life, while another 6 suffered minor injuries.
Police said the 29-year-old suspect was born in Strasbourg and has been recognised earlier by security services, classified as a potential terrorist threat.
