Australia has become one of the few countries that have officially recognized Western Jerusalem as the capital of Israel. However, the Australian government has declared it will not make its embassy shift from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem without a final peace agreement being reached.
Australia's Prime Minister, Scott Morrison, said the government would also recognise the future state of Palestine, with East Jerusalem capital, after the agreement between two states is reached. The prime minister himself announced this decision, who was giving a speech at the Sydney Institute today.
On the other hand, opposition leader Bill Scharten said the government's decision is a devastating decision and is part of the prime minister's pre-election campaign. He accused Morrison of putting personal interest ahead of national interest. His comments were also backed by the labist Foreign Office's spokeswoman, which said the prime minister is trying to save his face.
Last week, Palestinian leaders lobbied in various Muslim states to reduce the import of Australian products and the withdrawal of ambassadors from Australia, in case this country makes a decision to move its embassy to Jerusalem. Although the embassy will not now be moved to Jerusalem, Australia will establish the Office for Protection and Trade in Jerusalem and will start looking for an embassy location, writes the Guardian”.
