Today is the day early parliamentary elections are held in Armenia. These choices are being assessed as an important test for the man standing behind the Silk Revolution”, who troubled the country in April of this year. Nikol Pasinyan had been elected prime minister by MPs in May, following weeks of anti-corruption protests.
Eleven parties and political blocs are participating in these elections, while the coalition of the current prime minister, “opening Im”, is expected to win a parliamentary majority. The polling stations are open at eight o'clock in the morning and will close at twenty o'clock, local time. The first results are expected to appear in the early hours of Monday.
Pashinyuani was a newspaper editor earlier, but soon became an opposition politician. He resigned in October in order to distribute the pre-election assembly. Regular parliamentary elections have had to be held in 2022, while critics have said that these early elections have placed other candidates in an inappropriate position.
All political parties have been damaged by the short time to prepare well for these elections. The country's democracy is at risk from the so-called postrevolutionary euphoria”, says Armen Ashotian, deputy chairman of Armenia's Republican Party.
Armenia is a country that was once part of the former Soviet Union and has about three million inhabitants. There is a large Russian military base in Armenia, making the country dependent on Russia in terms of security, writes “BBC””, Report Express broadcast.
