The millions Serbia receives from exports to Kosovo, according to Prime Minister Haradinaj, are being used for campaigns against Kosovo, and this should go unanswered. The government made the decision today for an embargo on Serbian goods with an additional 10 per cent tax. The head of the Economic Ode, Berat Rukiqi, tells Express what impact this sanction will have.
The Kosovo government today decided to impose a 10 per cent tax on Serbian products. After the government's meeting, Prime Minister Ramush Haradinaj said this decision was taken as sanctions against the hostile behaviour the Serbian state has towards Kosovo.
The chairman of the Kosovo Economic Ode, Berat Rukiqi, has commented on Gazeta Express's current government decision,
Under the terms of CEFTA operation, Serbian products have not had customs duties. In terms of such a decision, a tax of 10 percent is imposed on import. For any new import coming from Serbia, then it will be paid 10 per cent on this value of the product imported”, Rukiqi has clarified.
He says that products, which are imposed on by the government, will not have immediate growth, but the situation can change if sanctions are not temporary.
I don't expect short-term effects on prices, if that's temporary, but if the demand increase for these products is definitely over, it can also affect the price. Because most of the stocks are still active, and as such are imported with past values, so I do not expect immediate effects on the” prices, Rukiqi said.
The chairman of the Economic Ode says he has earlier proposed that there be economic sanctions for Serbia to achieve political effects.
“has a destructive campaign and an ongoing disrespect of international agreements and obligations on the part of Serbia. Even when Serbia has not respected the energy agreement, I have proposed the same”, Rukiqi has said.
According to him, Serbia has deserved such sanctions and economic sanction is an appropriate approach to make Serbia bring comfortable agreements reaching Kosovo.
Prime Minister Haradinaj today after the cabinet meeting has cited Serbia's hostile approach as the reason for the deployment of sanctions.
He said Serbia benefits hundreds of millions of exports to Kosovo, while continuing to campaign against the state of Kosovo.
Kosovo imports goods from Serbia triple more than from Serbia, and more than from other neighbouring countries.
In 2016, Kosovo had broken the record with imports from Serbia, amounting to 400m euros.
