Koobov, who took office in 2016, reportedly died after a serious and long-term malady”.
GRU, this year, has been linked to an attack by nervous agents against former Russian spy Sergei Scripal and his daughter, Yulia.
The attack took place in Britain on March, and the Scripals survived.
Koobov has reportedly faced criticism from Russian officials for failing the operation.
The attack was allegedly carried out by Alexander Miskin and Anatoly Chepiga, both identified by British authorities as GRU operatives./rel
