If you walk fast, it is a very positive sign that new studies show that this practice can prolong your life, reports the Web MD.
Compared to the slow pace of walking, scientists have found that walking at an average rate reduces the risk of death by 20 percent, while the fastest rate reduces it by 24 percent.
The rapid rate of walking usually means speeds of five to seven miles [5 to seven km] an hour, but this too depends heavily on human physical condition. The speed drive automatically contributes to faster perspiration and it is a brilliant release valve”, said researcher Emmanuel Stamatakis, broadcast “Koha Ditore”.
The results are similar when it comes to death caused by tangible heart disease. More specifically, scientists have found that people who walk quickly reduce the risk of heart disease by 24 percent, while the mortality rate in people who walk at the average rate decreases by 21 percent. The benefits of fast walking were especially pronounced among the elderly.
For study purposes, Stamatakis and other researchers analyzed the death records and linked them to the results of 11 studies in England and Scotland between 1994 and 2008. In these surveys, people reported activities related to walking or running habits.
In a summary of the findings, researchers considered factors such as the amount and intensity of all physical activity, age, gender, and body weight.
The results were published in the British Journal of Medicine Sports.
