The 400-strong group, including LGBTQ community immigrants, broke out of the largest 5,000-strong convoy in Mexico City.
US Defence Secretary James Mattis said he would head to the US- Mexican border on Wednesday, his first visit since the deployment of thousands of troops there.
Larger groups are expected to reach the border in the coming days.
5,000 immigrants, who say they are fleeing persecution, poverty, and violence in their countries of Honduras, Guatemala and El Salvador, have made the most of their journey on foot.
The breakaway group, which arrived in Tijuana on Tuesday, boarded buses.
They joined a smaller group of about 80 immigrants who arrived in the border town Sunday.
Many of the smaller groups are members of the LGBTQ community, reports the media, who say they broke away from the main convoy after a few weeks, according to them, discriminating treatment by local residents and other travelers.
