In 1994 the average population age in the region was over 30. Serbia toped the list at an average age of 33. Then he ranked Bosnia and Herzegovina at the average age of 32, Montenegro at 31 and Macedonia at 30.
While in Europe, countries with an average average age in 1994 were Sweden, Italy and Germany, at 38.
In the early 2000 ' s, average age would grow for all of Europe. Italy and Germany would have the fastest aging age of 41.
In 2021, United Nations projections over the average age are 35 in Albania, where compared with countries in the region again are the youngest (see map).
But the situation appears bleak in 2060, where, according to UN projections, Albania will have an average age higher than the countries of the region, such as Macedonia, Montenegro and Serbia.
Among the main reasons for the aging of Albania's population at this rapid rate are falling births, immigration and increasing longevity.
The decline in fertility has gone towards European countries' levels, migration continues to be on a large scale. This behavior has been noted in most Western Balkan countries.
Europe has been entering the population aging cycle for years. Projections for the coming years are not at all optimistic. After a decade, United Nations projections show that in some European countries the average age will be 50 years old. These include countries such as Italy, Portugal, Greece, and then Germany, Poland, Bosnia and Croatia.
