The mice who were pulled out of their community, and kept in isolation showed signs of brain damage. After just a month, they had smaller nerve cells in certain parts of the brain. In the meantime, there were other brain changes, scientists reported at the annual meeting of the U.S. Neuroscidents' Association.

It is not known if similar injuries occur in the brain of isolated people. If so, the result is implications for the health of people who spend only most of their time, including tens of thousands of inmates in isolation in the United States, and elderly in social care institutions.

New results, along with other brain studies, clearly show that for social beings, isolation is harmful, says University of Michigan neurobiologist Huda Akil. “No doubt this changes the basic architecture of the brain”- Akil adds.

Neurobiologist Richard Smein of Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia and his colleagues raised communities of multiple mouse generations in large cages filled with toys, mazes and small steps to climb.

When some of the animals reached adulthood, they were taken and placed individually in a small dark cage, Smine said. This immediate transition from a complex society to isolation prompted brain changes that Smine and his colleagues later discovered.

The overall size of nerve cells, or neurons, decreased by about 20% after a month of isolation. This contraction was approximately stable over three months, while rats remained in isolation. Nervosa (green) cells in the brain have small collections of texting called spina dendrite.

After a month of social isolation, mouse neurons had more of these spins, a new study shows. But as isolation continued, they disappeared. To the surprise of the researchers, after a month of isolation, mouse neurons had a higher density structure for making nerve connections in density that accepted the message.

An increase in the number of spinins is a difference that usually signals something positive. It's almost as if the brain is trying to save itself” Smine said. But after three months, the density of dendrite sprinkles had fallen to basic levels, perhaps a sign that the brain cannot save itself when facing constant isolation.

“It's been trying to recover, it can't, and we start seeing these problems”- added Smine further. Researchers also discovered other disturbing signals, including reducing a protein called BDNF, which promotes the growth of neurons. Stress hormone levels, cortisol, also changed. Compared to rats placed in groups, isolated mice already had more DNA destroyed in their neurons.

Researchers studied neurons in the sense bark, a brain region involved in obtaining information, and motor bark, which helps to move control. Whether similar effects occur in other areas of the brain is unknown, Smine says.

It is also unknown how nervous changes are related to mouse behavior. In humans, long - term isolation can lead to depression, anxiety, and psychosis. Brain power is also affected. Insulated people start having problems with reasoning and memory.

Sime is conducting long-term studies, aimed at understanding the effects of contracting neurons, thinking skills and behavior. He and his colleagues also plan to return isolated rats to their groups to see if brain changes can be undone. These types of studies affect an important issue, Achilles says. The question is: “When is something too late to repair?”
