Pope Francescu accepted the resignation of Washington's cardinal Donald Wuerl, who has resulted in the scandal of sexual abuses that have shocked the Catholic Church.
Donald Weerl took over this year by replacing Cardinal Theodore McCarrick, the Archbishop of Washington accused of sexual abuse.
However, he was under surveillance in dealing with cases of sexual abuse when he was Bishop of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, between 1988-2006.
According to the findings of a large Pennsylvania jury released in August, more than 300 Catholic priests have sexually abused at least 1,000 children over the past 70 years, and church leaders have done their best to cover them.
