Few would believe know the prison without guards in Kosovo

That is because in the same prison, prisoners are light acts and sentences to them mainly amount to up to three years.

The capacity of this prison is for 200 prisoners.

Smrekonica Prison Director Xhevdet Maqastena tells of Calxo. com his work experiences which he's been doing for seven years already.

With the law on executing criminal sanctions, the Smreconica Correcting Centre is an open-type prison. This is the execution of the only men's adult sentence”, Maksten said.

There are no minor or female convicts in the Smrekonica prison.

The Smrekonica prison staff consists of 52 officers who are promoted according to the positions and duties they exercise.

The director shows that all the convicts in the Smrekonica Prison work different jobs, ranging from court cleaning jobs, in the kitchen, and in a space of 5 hectares where they plant trees and vegetables.

On the other hand, Maqasten shows how a prisoner works.

The prisoners get up at 7: 00 a.m., until 8: 00 p.m., they perform routine activities, and from 8 p.m., there are other technical administrative parts performed by staff, and then prisoners perform their work activities within the corrective institutions until 12: 00 p.m., then there is lunches, and another routine comes, from 1: 00 p.m., and from 1: 00 p.m., they start working again, until 16 p.m., after 16 p.m.

A characteristic of this prison is the fences within which prisoners make their lives after their sentence until the day they regain their freedom.

“is an open type institution and a large size of this prison is managed with trust. The chances of leaving the institution are very small. There have been cases in the past when a convict was released but these are rare cases”, the director of the Smreconica prison says further, adding that the convicts in this prison are at benefits, where family visits” are allowed, he said.

Director Maqasten indicated whether there were cases of introduction of narcotics within the Smrekonica prison.

There's also a scale in our society, and no category of people is immune to this phenomenon. There have been trends when such cases were observed, but in these cases the institution certainly uses rules and procedures, police, prosecutors and appropriate measures were reported”, he added.

He goes on to say that in Smrekonica Prison there is no convict suffering the punishment for narcotics.

According to the prison account, it also depends on how many convicts remain in a room.

Prisoners in Smkrekonica prison do not have bars, while their room holds a bed, a TV, room cleaning tools and a table.

Director Maqasten shows whether he feels the absence of armed guards in the prison he runs.

No such case ever existed in this prison. The idea of this prison is this, there are convicts of extremely good behavior, with proficiency, with privileges, and the consciousness of convicts is why to lose these disadvantages and return to closed prisons and lose all of these contributions”, Maqasten says.

Supply with food and other equipment is done through the contracting companies of the Kosovo Correcting Service.

The part of the visits, according to Maqasten, is arranged and convicts are pleased to allow family visits.

“The convicts have four visits a month during weekend days, but very often convicts make extra requests and the institution allows them on the basis of their good behaviour”, the director says.

To work in the kitchen, the director said appropriate staff is selected.

Within the Smreconica prison is another ambulance and a drug store.

Prisoners in Smrekonica also have a library that they can use to get books to read and return to the shelves.

Two prisoners are cared for to keep records of books taken from prisoners.

Part of the gym is also arranged within prison space, while the rooms where convicts perform religious rituals are not left to the side.
