There were unconfirmed reports of gun shooting.
Police, quoted by the daily newspaper Koelner Stadt-Anzeeger, said a couple were involved in the incident and that the man was fighting with his wife at a McDonald's restaurant before holding her hostage at a pharmacy at the station.
Reports speak of at least one explosion during the incident.
