111 people charged with war crimes in Kosovo, only 40 convicted

The Fund for Humanitarian Law in Kosovo today has held a media conference in which publication was presented: Mirror of war crimes trials in Kosovo in 1999-2018.
In this publication, there are also subjects where criminal procedures are still under way.
Parts of this publication are subjects dealing with a number of indictees who, after the establishment of the indictment against them, have escaped from detention in Mitrovica or from Mitrovica hospital during 2000 and 2001, Koha Ditore reports.
Project co-ordinator Anka Kurteshi-Hidari has said this publication will be a reliable and useful source of information on these judgments.
This mirror will be a reliable source for local judges and prosecutors since EULEX have received competencies for proceeding war crimes trials. The media will also have for the first time a complete approach to these subjects, which are presented chronologically according to the date of the indictment”, she said.
The associate, Amer Alija, has introduced statistical data from this publication.
This mirror provides the data for 48 subjects. They are introduced under official appointments, under which criminal procedures have been conducted on the basis of charges filed for war crimes in Kosovo since 1999-2018.
Co-worker of this project, Amer Alija, said that out of 48 subjects as much as were processed, 25 are to Serbs, 19 to Albanians, 3 materials to Montenegrins and one to RAE communities.
111 people have been charged with war crimes in Kosovo. Of them only 40 have been convicted, while 26 are fugitives and others are still on trial.
