A French climber trapped on the top of one of Pakistan's deadliest mountains is already safe after a dramatic rescue operation.
The search for her Polish climbing partner, however, has been cancelled. Elisabeth Revol and Tomasz Mackiewitz were climbing Nanga Parbat, which also has the murderous mountain nickname, when they were blocked to an altitude of 7400 meters Friday.
A team of mountain elites from Poland, located near the nearby top of the K2, were thrown into rescue, climbing the mountain at night and finding the French alive. Four team members, who are trying to climb for the first time in the winter K2, the world's second-highest peak, were sent Nanga Parbat with a Pakistani Army helicopter.
They sat more than 1,000 feet [11,000 m] below the site where lost climbers were last seen. In the early hours of Sunday, on “page The Polish team's Facebook” was reported, “Elisabeth revol was found”.
Tomasz Mackiewitz, however, was separated from the Revolution and his rescue, according to the team, unfortunately it was not possible because the weather and altitude put the lives of rescuers at extreme risk. It was a terrible and painful decision... we're all sad, they wrote.
Nanga Parbat in northern Pakistan has been called a killing mountain because more than 30 climbers have lost their lives trying to get it before the first successful mission in 1053.
Last year, a Spaniard and an Argentinian were declared dead after they disappeared under an avalanche while trying to climb the top. In 2013, armed men killed 10 foreign climbers and their Pakistani guide at the Nanga Parbat base camp.
