Tensions between Romania and Hungary are increasing, following a statement by Romanian Prime Minister Mikhail Tudose, who threatened to hang members of the Hungarian minority in the Szeklerland region, in which ethnic Hungarians are majority.
If the Székely community flag waves over institutions, everyone will wave next to it”, Romanian media quoted Prime Minister Tudose as saying.
Following that statement, Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijártó, who on Friday summoned the Romanian ambassador to Budapest to seek explanations concerning the prime minister's statement.
Szijártó said he was not satisfied with the ambassador's explanation.
“The threat of an ethnic community with execution was “legally unacceptable”, Szijártó said, adding that the debate on ethnic Hungarians in Romania should be held “peacefully”.
Some 1.2 million people live in Romania in Transylvania, a former region of the Austro-Hungarian Empire that became part of Romania at the end of World War I.
