US President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un have recently crashed for the size of the nuclear button they have on their respective tables. After North Korean reminded Trump and the world that his nuclear button was always on his desk, the American president retorted, saying his button was bigger and more powerful...
And these recent rhetorics have no doubt aroused curiosity about how a nuclear weapon can be launched. The image of Trump with the finger on a button capable of launching a nuclear attack has been used to symbolize the speed with which this process can be carried out. But despite popular belief, nuclear suitcase, or what they call the U.S. nuclear football, which is always accompanied by a president, does not contain a button but has equipment and decision-making documents Trump should use to authorize the attack.
The president himself cannot press a button and make a rocket fly. He can only give the authentic order that others follow. According to experts, the decision on a nuclear attack requires the president to work with military aides, who own the materials he needs to order the crackdown, as well as personnel at all levels, from top commanders to army members working in the missile area.
No matter where it is located, in the White House, in the car, aboard Air Force One, or traveling abroad, Trump is always accessible, while the case with nuclear codes stays in the same elevator as it is, in the same hotel room and is protected by secret service agents. Also, there is a reserve case for the vice president, in case the president is ineffective.
The case contains four things, an option menu for impact; an ID card for the president to confirm his identity, a list of safe bunkers where the president can take refuge and instructions to use the emergency transmission system. As army officials carrying out the attack, they must work in pairs and agree before they can execute a nuclear attack.
