Arben Ahmetaj, minister of Economy and Finance in Albania, said today that in the third month of 2017, unemployment has dropped to 13.6 %.
But it seems that in reducing the unemployment rate in the country, the biggest impact does not have the opening of new jobs, but the massive departure of Albanians to EU countries.
If we refer to the same period reportedly lowering unemployment rates, we see there is an increase in the number of Albanian asylum requests in EU countries.
Referring to the official figures of INSTAT, the highest unemployment rate is in Vlora by around 24.6 %, while in Tirana the unemployment rate is estimated at 17 %.
Only 64.2% of the 15-64 age group in Tirana are active on the labour market. While the rest are nearly 36% unemployed or in early retirement.
The national unemployment average is 13.6%, where Vlora, Tirana, Durres, Kukes and Lezha have the highest figures.
Reference to Eurostat figures, 27.500 Albanians sought asylum in 2017 in EU countries. Germany remains at the helm of EU countries this year, where 15,495 citizens from Albania, followed by France with 8,875 requests and the Netherlands with 1.545.
