Kosovo citizens were forced to pay over 40 euros a year for car registration on behalf of environmental protection. But despite the obligation of Kosovars, to pay additional taxes to protect the environment, Pristina ranks as one of the most polluted cities in the world.

In 2012 the Kosovo Assembly had been approved “Law on the Road and Ecological Taxing of”, with the aim of protecting the environment.

This tax is paid by Kosovo citizens, every time they register their cars, but despite that, the environment situation in Kosovo has not improved.

At that time, Environment and Spatial Planning Minister Dardan Gashi had said that ecological tax and other taxes collected on behalf of environmental protection would be managed by the Environment Ministry and dedicated to the issue alone.

But according to the current state of the environment, air pollution levels have not improved and reached maximum pollution values, thus making Kosovo's capital, Pristina, the world's first place for the most polluted quality of air.

But as Environment Minister Albena Resiti himself has confirmed, the millions of euros in ecological taxes paid by Kosovars even when importing cars, but even when they record them each year, go directly to the Ministry of Finance. Then atom.

So it has been six years since the adoption of this decision, and it seems that the government of Kosovo has not used these tools in establishing the quality of environmental protection, but only been cast into its budget fund.

The amount of this tax depends on the weight of the vehicle. Those vehicles, which are under 3.5 tonnes of weight, citizens are obliged to pay 40 euros, while those vehicles that weigh over 3.5 tonnes of what they have to pay are 90 euros.

But Pristina has become one of the most dangerous countries to live and in terms of this Pristina municipality issue and Environment and Spatial Planning Minister Albena Resiti have some measures to prevent air pollution.

One of the measures has been the ban on the flow of vehicles on the streets of the capital from 0600 p.m. to 22:00 p.m., the sale of coal within Kosovo's territory, as well as free travel with urban traffic buses.

Regarding the matter of air pollution, a protest has been held today in “Square. Skenderbeu” Where they are required to take as fast action as possible to improve the air.

During 2017, about 30,000 old cars have been imported to Kosovo, while only 2 thousand and 500 of them have been new. And more than 27 thousand are used.
