Ireland's prime minister, Leo Vardkar, said his country would hold the referendum in late May to lift either the constitutional ban on most abortions.
The government has made the decision late Monday.
Vardkar said voters would be asked whether they want to keep the eighth amendment to the Constitution in force, or abolish it and authorise Parliament to establish abortion legislation.
Ireland, mostly Christian, has the strictest stop to abortion in Europe.
The abortion there is only legal when Mother's life is at stake.
Varadkar, who heads the centre-right party Fine Gael, has campaigned to facilitate the abortion ban, free Europe broadcasts.
